Memory foam Vs SAT Bed FAQ
What is the main difference between memory foam and the SAT mattress?
The main difference between memory foam and the SAT mattress is that a memory foam mattress is really nothing more then two pieces of foam glued to each other that relegates it to commodity status, whereby the SAT bed is a revolutionary new mattress technology harnessing the atmosphere as the most abundant resource of free energy in the world and is proprietary.
Are you sleeping on a chemical mattress?
In your lifetime, you'll spend over 200,000 hours in your bed. Changing your mattress is the best way to remove exposure from a third of your life while creating a safe, healthful sleeping environment.
The visco elastic memory foam mattress is chemically saturated foam that out-gases fumes into the environment. Comprised of but not limited to the following chemicals:
TDI Toluene Di-Isocynate
Polyol - Poly Ether Gycol
Silicone Surfactant
Teritary Amine
Stannous Octoate
Flame Retardant
Pigments/Dyes
Formation of visco elastic memory foam is an intricate process of chemicals occurring in simultaneous reaction. The urethane forming reaction occurs between the isocyanate and polyol creating carbon dioxide gas, which is produced by the reaction of isocynate with water.
Is my baby's mattress safe?
Pregnant mothers exercise extra caution and awareness in what they do to their bodies white they are pregnant. They strive to eat healthy and avoid unhealthy behaviors that might possibly affect their unborn babies. To most, babies are symbolic of purity and perfection. While growing in their mothers' womb, they are protected by the amniotic fluid surrounding them and they arrive into this world, pure and unadulterated. Exposure to our industrialized world won't happen for years to come, right? Not so fast. In the first benchmark investigation of its kind (Body Burden — The Pollution in Newborns, conducted by the Environmental Working, July 14, 2005, http://www.ewg.org/reports/bodyburden2/execsumm.php), the blood from babies' umbilical cords was analyzed for industrial chemicals and pollutants. "Two hundred and sixty-one chemicals were targeted. The number of chemicals actually found was 287,180 of which are known carcinogens in humans and animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 of them cause birth defects in animal tests. Of 209 compounds detected in the blood, eight of them are used in everything from stain and oil repellants in fast food packaging, to clothes and textiles, to flame retardants and pesticides". This study Is extremely telling of the environmental exposures that we all live with in our day to day lives and should be read in full. Our world is filled with chemical pollutants that get into our bodies without us even being aware that it is happening. We are exposed when we eat and drink, while at work, driving in our cars, while playing outdoors, when resting in the comfort of our own homes, when we breathe, and even when we sleep in our beds. The average person has no idea of all the places that chemical exposure occurs. In fact, even when you know where the dangers lurk, it is extremely hard if not impossible to stop all our exposure to outside toxins.
The EPA
The Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, (www.epa.gov) is the EPA's federal law that governs the safety of commercial chemicals. Their guidelines basically allow for and approve exposure to most every chemical used in industry and consumer products, with a qualifier, "This act authorizes the EPA to secure information on all new and existing chemical substances and to control any of these substances that could cause an unreasonable risk to public health or the environment.", unreasonable being the operative word. In plain English... these chemicals are approved for use and that REASONABLE RISK is not only assumed but is a given. In the EPA's "Exposure Factor Handbook (See Here) risk assessments are discussed on everyday environmental exposures. Exposure to environmental chemicals from drinking water, inhalation, dermal contact, consumer products, intake of several different food categories, breast milk, to residential and building exposures, and are assessed using body weight analysis formulas. These formulas include several physiological factors in calculating the risks of exposures including: the average daily dose normalized to body weight, exposure from childhood years and child weight, and life expectancy from rate of exposure. By their own admonition in the same handbook outlining the validity of their data and studies (referencing drinking water to cite one example), the EPA admits that the studies they base their findings upon are short term survey data, and that most of those short term surveys are based on recalls, and that by its very nature is subjective. The other pollutant entry mechanisms and their risk assessment discussions are similarly subjective and bothersome.
The most striking revelation of all from both of these sources is the one thing that is woefully obvious and clear. In not only North America but all over the globe, we are engulfed in a sphere of harmful environmental chemicals; a world of our own making, in which risks are calculated rather than eliminated, a world from which there is no escape and the rate of our life expectancy is determined by acceptable levels of chemical exposure from chemicals deemed necessary for modern life. It's clear that when our babies are born with bodies that already suffer exposure and global warming and environmental concerns are mainstream issues, there is a real problem that has existed for years. The wellbeing of our planet and people is deemed acceptable by antiquated ERA law based on the planetary conditions of the period in which they were revised (At that point it was already obvious that there was no turning back the hands of our industrialized run-away train.)- That was 30 years ago.
Fight Back
Given the circumstances, it seems reasonable that our best and most obvious course of action (one within our own immediate control) is to limit ours and our family's exposure to environmental chemicals whenever and wherever possible. There are many ways that we can limit significant exposure rates to certain sources of these chemicals. Some of the most obvious are by drinking and using only pure water for cooking and bathing, eating certified organically grown foods, using organic and earth friendly cleansers in our homes, and surrounding ourselves with textiles and textile products that are 100% organically grown and processed. These products include the clothes on our backs, the furniture we lounge in, the flooring and window treatments in our homes, and the bedding we sleep on, to mention a few. We spend a significant portion of our lives in our homes and in our beds sleeping. If you are sleeping on a mattress that is not certified to be organically grown using organic materials, and it has been treated with flame retardants, you are exposing your body (If you're pregnant, your baby is exposed as well.) to eight continuous hours of exposure to toxic chemicals. On the other hand, if you are sleeping on a totally organic bedding system with 100% organic textile bedding products, that is eight hours of sleep everyday of your life that you are not exposed to those chemicals, which then defies the EPA's life expectancy formula. It stands to reason that if you eliminate as many sources of exposure as possible, your health and life will be improved. You will feel better, live longer, and defy the odds. Additionally, Mothers-to-be that use organic materials will not inhale the same off gases that are found in chemically laden products, they will have less dermal contact, and create a safer pre-natal environment for their unborn child.
The organic industry has taken a sharp and much needed upward turn in recent years, partly because of the growing global concerns. Any consumer interested in pursuing a healthier lifestyle has more options today than at any other time in our modern industrial society.
What position does the Department of Health and Human Services take regarding the chemicals used in memory foam mattresses?
How does the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classify the chemicals being used in memory foam mattresses?
What positions do local State and Government take regarding the chemicals utilized in memory foam mattresses?
What does The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) classify the chemical hazards of memory foam mattresses to be?
The U.S. National Library of Medicine categorizes the chemicals in memory foam mattresses under what risk level?
What class of toxicity does the ATSDR Agency For Toxic Substances And Disease Registry take regarding the chemicals used in a memory foam mattress?
Why are there so many class action lawsuits against this public company?
Why is there a 30% return rate for memory foam mattresses compared to 3% for the SAT mattress?
Customers smell the chemicals, sweat too much and feel it is too firm and dense. The SAT mattress provides the optimal environment using natural organic materials that meet the health needs specifically for each individual.
Why do MFG's refuse to list the chemical composition of their mattress?
Fear! Their position is that the chemical composition is proprietary and a trade secrete! Well, Coca Cola's formula is proprietary and a trade secrete but they list the ingredients right on the can. They have no fear of disclosing what their product is made of. These MFG's are obviously fearful if the public were informed, they would not choose to sleep on such a chemically saturated mattress.
If memory foam is a commodity product, why is it so expensive?
Oil! Memory foam is a 100% petroleum based product. The cost of oil is the reason! Any chemically oriented product is going to be expensive since the price of oil steadily increases and the consumer pays for this at the retail level.
MFG's claim that their mattress "counteracts the effects of gravity" and offers "weightless repose". Is this possible?
No, it is obviously impossible. According to Webster's dictionary and the laws of the natural world, weightlessness can only be achieved outside of the gravitational pull of the earth, other celestial bodies, or, in freefall. By definition then, with the exception of astronauts, there are no humans on Earth sleeping in a weightless environment.
Why is an air mattress much better for you then a foam mattress?
Real simply, a foam mattress is a commodity product that can only absorb weight. It is not patented and the functionality is limited to only absorption, whereby an air mattress is a gas or fluid, which is able to displace weight. By displacing weight, you are able to reduce pressure even further.
Why is the SAT mattress able to relieve pressure whereby the memory foam mattress is only able to reduce it compared to inner spring mattresses?
The SAT mattress is the only air mattress in the world that is open to the atmosphere. The technology is patented whereby the functionality of memory foams mattress is not. The intake and outtake valves on the SAT mattress always optimize internal pressures inside the cylinders so that the individual is always floating optimally. The physics behind the technology are absolute with no margin of error. (Boyles Law) The memory foam mattress is not able to achieve displacement since it only absorbs!
Why is the SAT mattress better for support then the memory foam mattress?
Memory foams mattresses can only absorb, so eventually the individual bottoms out on foam since the foam can only compress so far. Two pieces of foam glued to each other cannot ideally correctly support since the human body is curved and the weight barring areas are not consistent. The shoulders, hips and buttocks carry the majority of weight on an individual's body. The SAT mattress has nine multiple zones that break the body into nine areas of correct support. The shoulders, hips and buttocks are always correctly supported regardless of body weight, type or shape.
Is the SAT mattress re-imbursable for Medicare, Medicaid and Private Insurance?
Yes, the SAT mattress is the only mattress recognized by the U.S. Gov't and Private Insurance in the consumer mattress marketplace. It has its own HCPS Code E0 373 Non Powered Pressure Relieving Mattress. memory foam's memory foam mattress is not recognized as Durable Medical Equipment under this Re-Imbursable Billing code. The SAT mattress was medically tested and scientifically evaluated by the U.S. Gov't for 6 years before it was awarded this prestigious recognition.
Why does a memory foam mattress create an environment for perspiration and sweating on an individual's body where as the SAT mattress does not?
Simple — Shearing and Friction. When a person lies on a vicso elastic memory foam mattress, their entire body and weight is absorbed into the foam. Shearing and friction occurs on the skin and tissue creating heat. Oxygen is cut off to the skin, which now sets off a signal to the brain for the individual to turn to allow capillary blood flow to occur. The heart muscle is working overtime pumping blood to cool down the body when it should be in a sustained resting mode. The human body is a natural furnace burning through billions of cells each night as we sleep. This energy that our bodies create has to have somewhere for it to dissipate and breath or perspiration occurs. The SAT mattress is a completely air permeable surface able to wick moisture away from the skin and evaporated it. The human body is being displaced optimally so there is no shearing or friction since the individual is not being absorbed.
Why does the SAT mattress use a virgin wool cover and the memory foam mattress use cotton?
Quality. The SAT mattress uses the finest all natural organic wool cover in the world. Imported from New Zealand where there is an indigenous sheep called Downs which is recognized throughout the world as the best. Nature's miracle fiber is wool! It is anti-microbial, anti-allergen and Anti-Fungal. Wool is able to absorb 30% of its weight in moisture before you feel wet or damp. It is easily removed for cleaning in a household washing machine and dryer. memory foam uses a very thin cotton cover the thickness of a tee shirt. Cotton absorbs moisture immediately and stays wet and damp creating an environment not conducive for optimal hygiene. How many days in a row could you wear a cotton tee shirt before you ultimately could not wear it anymore? This is why memory foam cannot warranty the cotton cover for more then 2 years!
Why is visco elastic memory foam prone to mold and mildew?
Simple. Foam is not launderable. The average mattress within 5 years time has 40% of its weight in dust mites and allergens. The feces and dust mites accumulate in foam since it almost impossible to adequately clean. Foam mattresses used in health care facilities all have durable nylon covers that are sprayed and cleaned after each patient use. The memory foam mattress used in consumer households never get sanitized. Dust mites and allergens are invisible to the naked eye but present incredible health issues the average consumer is not aware of. The SAT mattress is designed for easy cleaning and sanitizing. Each component has its own cotton jacket, which is easily removable for washing and is replaceable.
Memory foam is only warranted for 2 -10 years before being pro-rated, and the SAT mattress are 10-20 years. Why?
Integrity. Visco elastic memory foam starts breaking down after the first nights use! All foam breaks down regardless of consistency. Foam is a man made synthetic product that has a certain shelf life before the integrity is compromised and there is noticeable sinking and sagging. MFG's specifically acknowledges that their mattress will soften and loose its slow recovery ability over time in addition to indentation of up to ¾ of an inch. MFG's categorically highlights this in their warranty. The SAT mattress has multiple layers and components that can all be removed and replaced if necessary. Each component is made of the highest quality medical grade material tested over 20 years in health care facilities assuring 100 % guarantee.
Is the SAT mattress warranty voided like memory foam if you do not buy the foundation?
No! The SAT Self Adjusting Mattress will work on any surface! It is flexible and will bend to accommodate any plate form, box spring or foundation. Unlike memory foam, there is no pressure to try and sell you an additional item to make a greater profit margin. The SAT mattress company educates the consumer so that they only buy what is really necessary.
Why is the SAT mattress price more competitive then memory foam?
Advertising dollars! MFG's spends over 100 million dollars annually in America creating brand awareness via TV, Print Media and Infomercials. Unfortunately, memory foam has no patents on functionality: therefore there are hundreds of competitors selling virtually the identical visco elastic memory foam mattress. Ultimately, the consumer benefits by increased competition for commodity products, lowering cost considerably. The SAT mattress to date offers more value for the consumer's dollar since there is no advertising of any significance. The savings are passed along to the customer.
Why is the memory foam mattress relegated to commodity status?
No patents protecting it. NASA experimented with this visco elastic memory foam during early trials for G forces affecting fighter pilots. The foam proved to be non suitable since it did not adequately meet the specific requirements it was intended to be used for. So, it became available to anyone willing to make it. It has been around for decades and only until certain companies began spending substantial amounts of money advertising it, was there any interest in it. Visco elastic memory foam is limited in its very nature to be the optimum sleep environment since it doesn't adequately address the three main principles for restorative sleep.
What are the three main criterias for optimum sleep and why can't the memory foam mattress provide them where as the SAT mattress does?
The three main criteria for optimum sleep are:
Reduced Skin Temperature
Correct Spinal Support
Pressure Relief Below 32 mmHg
The visco elastic memory foam mattress provides an environment that creates heat and moisture whereby the optimum surface reduces skin temperature to lower the resting heart rate. Providing an environment that correctly supports rather then just absorbs benefits the entire spinal system. The computer board of the human body is the spinal system, every nerve ending in our bodies originate from the spinal cord. Good back and good spine health is necessary for overall optimum health and wellness. Last but not least, relieving pressure below 32 mmHg. Providing an environment that keeps a human being below capillary closure at all times is paramount to vital health. Circulation of blood carries vital nutrients and oxygen. Degenerative disease does not proliferate in an oxygen rich environment. The SAT mattress is clinically recognized to provide the optimum environment for these three main criteria. It is patented and is the only open-air system in the world. Its unique intake and outtake valve system is truly the only surface in the world that is individual specific.
Why do memory foam mattresses smell?
Memory foam manufacturers publicly acknowledge that memory foam mattresses smell and outgas. It is virtually 100% man made from petro chemicals. The "new bed smell" is due to these petrochemicals. All petroleum based chemicals smell and outgases which are considered not beneficial to breathing and inhaling. Over time the smell will dissipate but the outgassing still occurs and will never stop since all foam breaks down over time. As foam continues to break down the integrity of the foam is compromised. Foams best day of use is its first day!
Why is memory foam sensitive to temperature?
The amount of petro chemicals used in its manufacturing. The sample that is provided to you only needs to be placed in a freezer for a few minutes before it is as hard as a rock. This is due to the saturation in petro chemicals used so that it gives it the unique feeling and slow recovery ability.
MFG's proudly display accolades from Good Housekeeping and Arthritis Foundation where as the SAT mattress has accolades from the worlds best teaching facilities. What's the difference?
These accolades are paid for and are available to any company willing to pay a minimum of $25,000 annually. The SAT mattress accolades are not paid endorsements but rather clinical studies performed under strict compliance by independent scientist and health professionals.
